Durham Days of Giving – Day 17

Thank you for supporting the Durham Days of Giving!

Welcome to Day 17 and today’s charity is Music4Life.

We are a non-profit, community string orchestra in Ajax, Ontario. As a community orchestra, our objective is to provide a friendly and welcoming forum for string musicians, of all ages and all skill levels, to learn and play together. Our orchestra provides a unique experience for amateur players such that they are able to practice and perform along-side skilled music teachers and professionals who are part of the practicing and performing group. This arrangement provides an excellent learning environment for new players and is a true complement to traditional private lessons.

Through this fun and encouraging orchestra, our members gain performance experience by sharing our musical creations with our families, friends and our community at large. Our more advanced players are featured in quartet/quintet performances for community and private events.

Our Musical Director
Kathryn Knowles is an accomplished composer, cellist, and writer based in Toronto. Kathryn holds a Bachelor of Music and a Master of International Business from Queen’s University, as well as a Master in Music Composition from the University of Toronto where she was awarded the Joseph Armand Bombardier Canadian Graduate Scholarship. Her works have been played in workshops by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, The New Orford String Quartet, and the Penderecki String Quartet. She is currently working on a piece with the Accordion and Clarinet Duo, Joseph Petric and Martin Carpentier, to be premiered in 2020 in Toronto and Montreal. In addition to her work as a composer and writer, Kathryn is the General Manager of the Canadian League of Composers, and a Cello Instructor with Sistema Toronto. Kathryn is a strong advocate for the accessibility of music and art in today’s society and she values the constant pursuit and celebration of knowledge.
