Durham Days of Giving – Day 15

Thank you for supporting the Durham Days of Giving!

Welcome to Day 1 and today’s charity is BGC Durham (Formerly known as the Boys and Girls Club of Durham).

The Eastview Boys and Girls Club was founded in 1963 by the Simcoe Hall Women’s Welfare League of Oshawa. In 1989 the Eastview Boys and Girls Club received its own charter of operation with its own Board of Directors.

The first Executive Director of the Eastview Boys and Girls Club was Harold W. McNeill, who later was appointed judge of the Juvenile and Family Court of Oshawa/Whitby. Judge McNeill served as Executive Director for the Club from 1960 to 1968 and was responsible for the funding and building of the new and present clubhouse prior to its opening in 1963.

We welcomed Lisa McNee-Baker, our first female Executive Director in 2007. Lisa was responsible for leading many positive changes in our Club, including Eastview Boys and Girls Club officially changing its name to the Boys and Girls Club of Durham in 2011 – which reflected that our Club had grown to serve the entire Durham Region – and our Club renovation in 2018. Lisa left her position as Executive Director in early 2019 and was replaced by our current Executive Director, Kathleen Hutton.

In April 2021, Boys and Girls Clubs across Canada changed their names to BGC to reflect that our doors are open all kids and teens and to echo the inclusive practices we are known for – BGC serves people of all ages, backgrounds, and identities.

As of January 2021, BGC Durham has grown into one of the Region’s most established and effective youth service organizations, offering programs in 20 locations throughout the Durham Region. We have grown to have a core membership of approximately 1000 children and youth and serve an approximate user population of 6,000 per year, representing an age range from 4 years old to over 80 years old.

BGC Durham has provided a safe and supportive atmosphere for children and youth to grow, learn and work towards reaching their full potential for nearly 60 years and looks forward to continuing our work for many years to come.

Mission Statement
To provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life.
