Welcome to Day 13 and today’s charity is Girls Inc.
Girls Inc. of Durham is a registered charity, serving girls ages 6-18 in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa. Celebrating almost 40 years in Durham Region, Girls Inc. has provided thousands of girls with the confidence, self-esteem and tools to access a bright and economically independent future. Girls Incorporated of Durham empowers girls to believe in themselves and reach their full potential. We inspire all girls to be Strong, Smart and Bold through advocacy, education, and programs.
Girls who participate in Girls Inc. Programs:
• Grow self-esteem that carries over to home, school, and the community
• Develop sound decision-making and communication skills
• Assert themselves as confident individuals throughout their lives
• Build key leadership and strong work skills
• Create meaningful, supportive peer groups
Equality of rights, responsibilities and opportunities without regard to gender is essential to a just society. The contributions of girls today, and as emerging women, are essential to achieving that future equitable society. Through both programs and advocacy, Girls Inc. responds to today’s lack of equity for girls of every background and description. We affirm our support for equal rights and commit our resources to the active promotion of gender equity.
At the heart of our services at Girls Inc. we offer a series of eight signature programs designed for girls ranging from leadership and community action; self reliance and life skills; sports and adventure; careers and life planning; and healthy sexuality. Programs focus on such topics as violence prevention; math, science & technology; health & relationships; peer pressure; substance use prevention; media literacy; economic literacy and sports participation. Uniquely designed for girls aged 6-18, each program targets girls of a specific age bracket and are delivered through weekly workshops, summer and March Break camps, after-school programs, and in-school classes. Girls Inc. programs have a fully developed curriculum developed specifically to meet the developmental needs of girls. All programs are delivered by professionally trained facilitators, with measurable objectives and outcomes.
