Durham Days of Giving – Day 11
Thank you for supporting the Durham Days of Giving!
Welcome to Day 11 and today’s charity is Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre.
Our Mission: We empower a community of compassionate support, knowledge, and hope for anyone impacted by cancer.
Here you will find support whether dealing with the news of a cancer diagnosis, supporting a loved one through cancer treatment, or grieving the loss of a loved one to cancer.
Through compassionate care, Hearth Place supports the emotional needs of families within the Durham Community and beyond. Established in 1997, Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre welcomes cancer patients and their families to come and share their experiences, find resources, and discover new ways to care for themselves and each other.
Our programming encompasses all aspects of a cancer diagnosis including individual counselling, emotional support groups, wellness programs, caregiver and grief support, as well as children’s programming, including support for children diagnosed with cancer.
Hearth Place was the inspiration of Carolyn Alexander who, after being diagnosed with breast cancer, wanted to create a centre that would address the social, practical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs of anyone impacted by cancer, including family members, children and caregivers. After several years of planning, fundraising and developing the infrastructure, we were granted charitable status and opened our doors on January 29, 1997. Since that time, we have continually developed new programs to best meet the needs of our members and we are committed to supporting the Durham Region community and beyond.
In 2005, the Durham Region Homebuilders’ Association provided Hearth Place with a spectacular addition, which now provides considerably more program space as well as barrier free access for our members.
In 2019, the Woodland Homes Team built a second addition to our building, substantially increasing our programming space once again. We are thrilled to have more individual counselling rooms, a large and bright family support room, a teaching kitchen and an additional large group programming room. This additional space allows us to continue to meet the needs of our community.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer we encourage you to visit Hearth Place and find:
